Prozac - Anti-depressant medication
Prozac (Fluoxetine HCl)
Other names: Prozac Weekly, Sarafem
About Prozac
Prozac is a prescription medication used to treat major
depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia, and sometimes other
eating disorders. As Sarafem, Prozac is prescribed to treat very severe PMS,
now called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). In low doses, Prozac may
be used to treat fibromyalgia.
Prozac belongs to a family of antidepressants called selective serotonin
re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are thought to improve mood by
increasing the availability of a chemical in the brain called serotonin.
High serotonin levels tend to be associated with a feeling of well-being,
while depressed individuals often have low
Depression is not fully understood, but a growing amount of evidence
supports the view that people with depression have an imbalance of the
brain's neurotransmitters, the chemicals that allow nerve cells in the brain
to communicate with each other. Many scientists believe that an imbalance in
serotonin, one of these neurotransmitters, may be an important factor in the
development and severity of depression. Prozac may help to correct this
imbalance by increasing the brain's own supply of serotonin.
Some other antidepressant medicines appear to affect several
neurotransmitters in addition to serotonin. Because Prozac selectively
affects only serotonin, it may cause fewer side effects than other types of
medications. While Prozac cannot be said to "cure" depression, it does help
to control the symptoms of depression, allowing many people with depression
to feel better and return to normal functioning.
