PROPERTIES
Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin, derived from the penicillin nucleus, 6-amino-penicillanic acid. It is bactericidal against sensitive organisms during the stage of active multiplication. Amoxicillin antibiotic exerts its mode of action through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide.

Amoxicillin is acid stable, 80% of the dosage administered orally is absorbed. The presence of food in the stomach does not affect the total absorption of the medication. Usual dosage produces therapeutic concentrations in serum and various body fluids. Penetration of amoxicillin into the cerebrospinal fluid occurs in patients with inflamed meninges.

Amoxicillin is primarily excreted by the renal system, in biologically active form, reaching higher concentrations via the urine than the blood. Amoxicillin is not highly protein bound, with only 17% protein bound in serum.

Amoxicillin has a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The following named microorganisms are generally sensitive to the bactericidal action of amoxicillin "in vitro":
Gram-positive: Streptococcus sp., Diplococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus non-penicillinase producing.
Gram-negative: Haemophilus influenzae. Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella species, Shigella species, Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitides.

INDICATIONS
Otorhinolaryngological, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract infections caused by bacteria sensitive to amoxicillin.
